I dropped out of one of the best computer science programs in Canada
to teach myself data science using online resources like Udacity, edX, and Coursera. The decision was not difficult. I could learn the content I wanted to faster, more efficiently, and for a fraction of the cost. I already had a university degree and, perhaps more importantly, I already had the university experience. Paying $30K+ to go back to school seemed irresponsible.
So why data science?
Simplistically, I love math, stats, and programming and data science combines them all in an exciting and powerful way. Why now? I was never exposed to computer science as a kid. It took a near-graduation crisis and a chat with a mentor for me to give coding a legitimate shot with Udacity CS101. Eight months of research and soul-searching later, I started my data science journey.
